What is Kisan Rail?

Multi-commodity, multi-consignor parcel train service launched by Indian Railways in Aug 2020. Unlike a full-load hire truck, you can book even a few crates — the train aggregates lots from many farmers. It has refrigerated coaches for perishables (grapes, pomegranate, banana, mango, onion, tomato, dairy, meat) and general coaches for grains, pulses, and oilseeds.

The Operation Greens–TOP to TOTAL scheme gives 50% subsidy on freight for fruits and vegetables — a huge saving vs road transport, especially for long-distance moves like South → North India.

When Kisan Rail actually wins vs road transport

  • Distance > 800 km — road becomes expensive per km; rail wins.
  • Perishables to a metro — Nashik grape → Delhi, Devgad mango → Amritsar, Anantnag apple → Bengaluru.
  • Small consignor lots — you don't need a full truck's worth (10-12 tonnes). You can send 1-2 tonnes.
  • Off-peak / distress harvest — when local mandi is glutted and northern/southern mandi has scarcity.
  • FPO collective consignments — pooling several small growers into one train booking is where FPOs materially help.

Cost math — is it really cheaper?

Illustrative example on Nashik → Delhi grape (approx figures — confirm current with parcel office):

Truck (10 t)Kisan Rail (10 t)
Base freight~₹70,000–80,000~₹40,000–50,000
50% Op-Greens subsidy−₹20,000–25,000
Loading / unloading~₹4,000~₹5,000
Effective total~₹74,000~₹25,000–30,000
Time36-48 hrs (road)~24 hrs
Reality check. Rail schedules can be affected by seasonality and demand — Kisan Rail services are not run daily on every route. Confirm the next scheduled train BEFORE committing to a buyer. In some months certain routes may be paused. Best sanity-check: call your local Divisional Commercial Manager or use the Freight Business Development portal.

How to book — 3 paths

  1. Nearest railway station parcel office. Bring your goods, a filled Forwarding Note, ID proof, receiver's address. They tell you the next Kisan Rail service, weigh, and issue the Parcel Way Bill.
  2. Freight Business Development portal (fbd.indianrailways.gov.in). Register once. See scheduled rakes. Book a wagon slot online. Best for FPOs / traders shipping multiple tonnes.
  3. Through an aggregator (FPO, cooperative, or Kisan Bharat-style logistics partner). They handle the paperwork; you drop produce at the collection point. Aggregator margin ~5-8%.

Honest reality

Since 2023-24, Kisan Rail service frequency has reduced considerably on many routes because road transport got cheaper (diesel prices, GST harmonisation) and many rakes ran empty. The scheme is not being expanded aggressively in the current phase. Practical takeaway: Kisan Rail is genuinely great for bulk perishables to distant metros, but for smaller lots to nearer mandis, a shared truck is often faster and cheaper today. Always compare quotes.
  • Best if your consignment is 1+ tonne, going to a metro 800+ km away.
  • Coordinate with your receiver / buyer — someone needs to receive at the destination station.
  • For grains/pulses, bag it properly — parcel handling isn't cotton-glove.
  • For perishables, request refrigerated coach in advance. Not all trains carry one.
